Description
According to SAMHSA’s concept of a trauma-informed approach, “A program, organization, or system that is trauma-informed:
-
Realizes the widespread impact of trauma and understands potential paths for recovery;
-
Recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients, families, staff, and others involved with the system;
-
Responds by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices; and
-
Seeks to actively resist re-traumatization."
Meeting the needs of trauma-exposed clients is best accomplished by a holistic, program-wide approach.
Social Workers, Medical professionals, school-based providers or educators, and other community providers are often the first line of defense for those coping with traumatic events. Information and resources to better support those we serve, including the use of evidence-based intervention for providers to help those we serve exposed to traumatic events.
Using “trauma-informed care” means identifying individuals who often have various types of exposure to trauma in their lives. Under this type of care, we assume those who have been traumatized need support and understanding from those around them to maintain a healthy quality of life. We help others understand, that trauma survivors can often be re-traumatized by service providers. The RSCWC trainers when addressing TIC seek to educate our communities about the impact of trauma on staff, clients, co-workers, friends, family, and even ourselves. Understanding the impact of trauma is an important first step in becoming a compassionate and supportive community.
