The course “Consensual Non-Monogamy in Clinical Practice: Affirming Care & Competency” delves into the world of consensual non-monogamy (CNM). This course explores the principles, challenges, and rewards of CNM relationships. This course is designed for mental health professionals seeking to gain a better understanding of this alternative relationship structure and how they can support clients who are interested in or currently practicing the lifestyle.
This course defines various types of non-monogamous relationships, including polyamory, open relationships, swinging, etc. The course also highlights how those interested in the lifestyle can have healthy relationships.
This is an intermediate-level course, and there are no specific prerequisites for this course. The course is open to mental health professionals, students, and individuals interested in gaining knowledge and to help navigate CNM relationships.

Define consensual non-monogamy (CNM) and distinguish it from other relationship structures.
Identify common motivations and challenges faced by clients exploring CNM.
Apply culturally sensitive and nonjudgmental therapeutic approaches when working with CNM clients.
Develop communication strategies to support healthy boundary-setting and conflict resolution in CNM relationships.
Recognize and address the impact of societal stigma and internalized shame on clients practicing CNM.
Analyze ethical considerations and potential countertransference issues when working with CNM clients.
Utilize trauma-informed approaches when working with clients who have experienced relationship harm in CNM contexts.
Trainer
Alexis Frederick-Bouy, is a Sexologist and Mental health Therapist.
Alexis’ educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology from Bloomsburg University, a Master of Arts in Community Psychology and Social Change from Pennsylvania State University, and a Master of Education in Human Sexuality Studies from Widener University.
She served the mental health community for over ten years focusing on family dynamics emphasizing attachment, communication, emotional regulation, executive functioning, and resource building. Alexis' passion is to educate and empower individuals to live a fulfilling life by challenging survival thinking and living patterns and replacing them with thriving patterns.
Alexis is a wife and mother of two. Alexis is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.
Faith E. Iloka (she/her) is a Nigerian Mental Health Counselor who employs a collaborative and client-centered approach in her work with clients. Faith utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, art therapy, feminist-therapy, multicultural, and trauma-informed interventions to support and empower clients towards increased self-awareness and healthy coping skills. Faith’s interests lie at the intersections of mental health and wellness, creative arts, and race. Faith also incorporates spirituality as it relates to clients’ unique backgrounds and experiences. Faith works with clients to design an individualized treatment plan to help clients feel heard and held, and support clients as they transition from “surviving” to “thriving”.
Faith received her BA in African American Studies from Princeton University and her Master of Education and Master of Arts degrees in Mental Health/Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. Faith completed her Masters Externship at Baruch College Counseling Center. Faith’s areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, grief, multicultural issues, romantic/interpersonal relationship issues, self-esteem, stress/anger management, and trauma/racial trauma.
Faith enjoys afrobeats, playwriting, traveling, thrifting/fashion, and trying new foods.
