Navigating Ethical Non-monogamy in Practice

Ethical non-monogamy(ENM) is a growing practice by many individuals in today's society. With alternative relationship lifestyles being more acceptable and accessible, individuals have grown an increased interest in the lifestyle. For those practicing the lifestyle and seeking relational therapy, it may be difficult to find a mental health professional who understands the lifestyle and the unique challenges that may arise specifically within that community.

What is ENM?

Ethical non-monogamy is a broad umbrella for those who desire romantic and/or sexual relationships with more than one partner at a time. Some people use the term polyamorous to describe this practice which is also acceptable. ENM involves the agreement between all partners that either one or more partners will have multiple relationships.

What are some ENM relationship types?

Those practicing ENM may do so in a variety of ways. The following is a list of ENM relationship types: polygamy, open relationships, throuples, swinging, casual dating etc. Those who are practicing ENM do so according to agreements made within the relationship.

What are some challenges faced by those in ENM relationships?

While ENM relationships face many of the same challenges as monogamous relationships, there are some challenges that are unique to these relationship types such as jealousy, insecurity, fear, worry, doubt, etc.

How do we as mental health professionals support ENM relationships?

The first step to supporting clients in ENM relationships is to check-in with yourself about any personal biases you may have. While ENM is becoming more socially acceptable it is still counter-culture to the traditional monogamous relationships. Do your research! If you have a client that discloses they are interested in or currently practicing ENM, be curious about what relationship style they are interested in or practicing. Read up on the culture of that specific relationship style and some challenges those practicing may face.
